Laser Skin Resurfacing, Chemical Peel, and Microdermabrasion Treatments

Do you have fine lines or wrinkles, or skin texture problems? A laser skin resurfacing, chemical peel, or microdermabrasion treatment at the Irving (Dallas area) offices of Dr. Ed C. Matthews may be all that you need to achieve a smoother, healthier complexion. These advanced treatments are noninvasive and effective ways to rejuvenate your appearance, and they don't require weeks of recovery.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Age, sun damage, facial expressions, and environmental pollutants can take their toll on your skin, etching wrinkles and fine lines into your face. Laser skin resurfacing can reduce or eradicate these lines and wrinkles, particularly those that appear around the eyes (such as crow's feet) and mouth (for example, "lipstick lines," the fine wrinkles into which lipstick can 'bleed'). Laser skin resurfacing can be adapted to a variety of other skin defects as well.

Laser skin resurfacing is a fairly new treatment for improving the skin's texture and appearance. It can often provide a physician with greater control over how deeply the skin is penetrated, compared to other resurfacing procedures such as microdermabrasion and chemical peel treatments. In addition to skin resurfacing, lasers can sometimes be effective for:

  • facial scars
  • acne scars
  • unwanted facial hair

What Is a Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatment Like?

A laser skin resurfacing treatment at the Irving cosmetic medicine practice of Dr. Ed Matthews is a simple procedure that can be performed over one's lunchtime if desired. Your face will first be cleansed to remove any trace of makeup and oil from the skin. An antibiotic will be applied to kill bacteria. Dr. Matthews will then apply the laser, which is carefully programmed to a specified level of penetration. The laser device looks somewhat like a microphone and is passed over the skin to be treated. It vaporizes a layer of damaged or wrinkled skin by applying short, high-intensity emissions of laser light. Some areas such as deep scars may need repeated treatment.

If you feel that laser skin resurfacing at our Irving office might be right for you, contact us to arrange a private consultation. A fresh new complexion can become a reality for you.

FotoFacial™

The FotoFacial™ is a gentle alternative to laser skin resurfacing. In a FotoFacial™ treatment, precise amounts of pulsed fluorescent light are delivered to the skin, stimulating the production of collagen. The FotoFacial™ technology is designed to rejuvenate skin on the face and neck, and to treat:

  • fine lines
  • wrinkles
  • rosacea
  • sun damage
  • acne scars
  • large pores
  • blotchiness
  • age spots
  • freckles
  • melasma

FotoFacial™ technology can also be used on the chest and arms. In addition, sun and age spots on the hands can be reduced with the FotoFacial™ light system.

We use the Ellipse Intense Pulse Light Laser made by Candela for this photo-rejuvenation procedure. The new Ellipse technology requires less energy than traditional IPL (intense pulse light) lasers, eliminating the need for messy cooling gels and reducing pain and discomfort. The entire procedure takes approximately 30 minutes, and patients can return to normal activities immediately following treatment. Dr. Matthews can advise you regarding whether FotoFacial™ treatment or laser skin resurfacing at our Irving office is needed to correct your complexion problem.

The results of FotoFacial™ treatment are gradual, but long-lasting. Multiple treatments are recommended for optimum results. After each FotoFacial™ treatment, patients will notice their skin progressively improving. The skin’s tone and texture will be enhanced, and redness and sun damage will gradually be eliminated. As new collagen is produced, skin will begin to look more radiant and feel smoother.

Chemical Peel Treatments

The light glycolic chemical peel treatments used at the Dallas-area practice of Dr. Ed Matthews are safe and gentle, and can be used on all types of skin. A light glycolic peel is potentially ideal for patients who want quick and dramatic results with minimal recovery time. Unlike deeper chemical peels, a light glycolic peel involves very little pain or discomfort, and side effects are generally limited to slight redness for several hours or days following the procedure.

A glycolic peel is designed to remove layers of dead skin and stimulate the production of new skin cells and collagen. As your body begins to generate new collagen, your skin will become noticeably smoother, and years of damage will begin to fade away. A glycolic peel can even out skin that has been damaged by acne and eliminate fine wrinkles and discoloration. If you would like to improve the texture of your skin, or if you wish to diminish dark spots, acne, and fine wrinkles, you may be a suitable candidate for a light glycolic chemical peel. A combination treatment regimen composed of a chemical peel and another cosmetic procedure offered at our Dallas area practice, such as microdermabrasion, BOTOX® Cosmetic, a dermal filler such as Radiesse™, Sculptra™, Restylane®, or Juvéderm™, or physician-grade skin care products, can provide you with a refreshed, younger-looking appearance that can be maintained for years.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is one of the most common nonsurgical cosmetic treatments available, second only to BOTOX® Cosmetic in popularity and demand. Microdermabrasion can be used to:

  • improve the tone and texture of skin
  • reduce scars from acne
  • reduce fine lines and wrinkles
  • even out skin discoloration
  • minimize pores
  • help prevent acne breakouts

During microdermabrasion treatments at our Dallas-area office, we use a gentle spray of microcrystals to polish the skin, unclog pores, and remove dead skin cells. The microcrystals are applied to the skin and quickly vacuumed away along with dead skin cells, revealing a new layer of softer, younger-looking skin. Because only the outermost layer of skin cells is removed, there is little or no pain, and only a slight redness that will likely dissipate in a few hours.

Microdermabrasion can be combined with a glycolic chemical peel for optimal results or used in conjunction with physician-grade skin care products. After your first treatment, you will notice significant improvement in the tone and texture of your skin, but additional microdermabrasion sessions are advisable for more dramatic results. At his Dallas-area center, Dr. Matthews can develop a custom treatment plan to fit your specific needs and goals.
