BOTOX® Cosmetic use at the Dallas and Irving-area offices of Dr. Ed C. Matthews has provided excellent benefits for hundreds of patients. Approved by the FDA for cosmetic applications in 2002, BOTOX® Cosmetic is a nonsurgical treatment that can reduce frown lines, furrows, fine lines, and wrinkles around the eyes, between the eyebrows and across the forehead. When small amounts of BOTOX® Cosmetic are injected into the muscles that cause these wrinkles and furrows, the muscles are temporarily relaxed, causing the surface of the skin to gradually smooth out and preventing the formation of further lines and wrinkles. Unlike the dermal fillers Juvéderm™ , Radiesse™, Sculptra™, and Restylane®, BOTOX® Cosmetic does not fill in wrinkles, but rather treats them at their source.
BOTOX® Cosmetic works by stopping the production of acetylcholine in the muscle where it is injected. Acetylcholine is a chemical that causes muscles to contract. After a BOTOX® injection, the muscle's contractions are blocked, and the wrinkles or furrows that those contractions had produced start to fade.
BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment at our Dallas area (Irving) practice is quick and relatively painless. After your initial consultation and medical history review with Dr. Matthews, the treatment takes about ten minutes and uses a very fine needle to make the injection(s). There is no recovery time, and you can expect to see results within about three to five days. The effects can be expected to last for three to six months, and follow-up treatments may be needed to maintain the results. After repeated treatments, the effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic can become permanent if the muscles are retrained and cease to contract.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is the ideal treatment for:
If you're looking for a noninvasive way to treat one or more of these facial features, you may be a good candidate for BOTOX® Cosmetic injections. Ask Dr. Matthews whether BOTOX® Cosmetic, a dermal filler, or both may be your best option. Finer lines may appropriately be removed with laser skin resurfacing.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is made from botulinum toxin type A, which is a neuromuscular toxin produced by bacteria. In its pure, undiluted state, botulinum toxin can be deadly; however, BOTOX® Cosmetic contains a highly diluted form of this toxin. BOTOX® Cosmetic has been used safely for more than 15 years for the relief of severe headaches, muscle spasms, and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis). Millions of people have now had BOTOX® injections for cosmetic reasons, with only rare side effects such as allergic reactions.
BOTOX® Cosmetic has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). The BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are used to block the nerves that stimulate sweat glands in body areas such as the underarms, palms, face, and feet. Hyperhidrosis is a surprisingly common genetic condition that affects both men and women and individuals of every age and race. It can be an extremely embarrassing condition, and causes many people to withdraw in social and professional situations. BOTOX® Cosmetic has been used very successfully by Dr. Matthews as a hyperhidrosis treatment.
There are several other nonsurgical treatment options available to patients with hyperhidrosis. Depending on the severity of the condition, treatment can include anything from BOTOX® injections under the arms, to prescription lotions, oral medication, and more. For patients with mild to moderate hyperhidrosis, nonsurgical treatment can be extremely effective. Hyperhidrosis has been treated successfully many times with BOTOX® Cosmetic at our Irving / Dallas-area practice.
